Why Decimals Matter

Decimals aren't a new kind of number — they're just another way to write fractions. 0.1 is the same as 1/10. 0.25 is the same as 25/100. Understanding this connection makes everything else about decimals easier.

Kids who struggle with decimals almost always struggle with place value. The fix is usually backing up to shore up place value before drilling decimal operations.

Grade 4: Introduction to Decimals

Fourth grade is typically when decimals are first introduced, usually to the tenths and hundredths place. Students learn to:

Read and write decimals (0.4 is "four tenths")
Connect decimals to fractions (0.7 = 7/10)
Compare decimals (is 0.4 bigger than 0.38?)
Plot decimals on a number line
Add and subtract decimals in simple cases

One common trap at this age: kids think 0.38 is bigger than 0.4 because "38 is bigger than 4." Always remind them that 0.4 is the same as 0.40, and 0.40 > 0.38.

Fifth grade is where decimals become fully operational. Students add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals, including dividing a decimal by another decimal.

The critical skills:

Adding and subtracting: line up the decimal points
Multiplying: ignore the decimals, multiply, then count total decimal places in the factors and place the decimal in the product
Dividing: if dividing by a decimal, move the decimal in both numbers until the divisor is a whole number

The most common 5th grade decimal mistake is with multiplication: forgetting to count decimal places. If your child multiplies 0.3 × 0.4 and gets 1.2 instead of 0.12, they skipped the decimal-counting step. Walk through it slowly — 0.3 has one decimal place, 0.4 has one decimal place, so the product has two.

Grade 6: Applied Decimals

By 6th grade, operations with decimals should be fluent. Decimals now appear inside bigger problems: ratios, percentages, rates, and simple algebra. Students also work with decimals through the thousandths and ten-thousandths.

Place Value Is Everything

If your child is struggling with decimals at any grade, go back to place value first. They should be able to look at 4.267 and say:

4 is in the ones place (worth 4)
2 is in the tenths place (worth 2/10 or 0.2)
6 is in the hundredths place (worth 6/100 or 0.06)
7 is in the thousandths place (worth 7/1000 or 0.007)

If this feels shaky, drill place value with physical models — base-10 blocks, money, or grid paper — before attempting operations.

Connecting to Money

Money is the best real-world example of decimals. $1.25 is one and twenty-five hundredths of a dollar. Kids who already count change and make purchases have a natural intuition for decimals to the hundredths.

Use money problems to make decimals concrete:

"If a candy bar costs $1.25 and I pay with a $5, how much change?"
"If I buy 3 notebooks at $2.75 each, how much total?"

These are actual decimal operations dressed up as real life.

Common Mistakes Across All Grades

Not lining up decimal points when adding or subtracting
Ignoring the decimal and getting a product too big by a factor of 10 or 100
Comparing decimals by length (0.38 > 0.4)
Not moving the decimal correctly when dividing by a decimal

Each of these is a targeted fix. Once you know which one your child is making, a few days of focused practice clears it up.
