Why "1 Through 12" Is the Target
Most U.S. math curricula expect students to know multiplication facts from 0 × 0 up to 12 × 12 by the end of 4th grade. That's 169 facts total, though thanks to the commutative property (3 × 4 = 4 × 3), there are really only about 78 unique facts to memorize — and closer to 30 if you exclude the easy ones like ×0, ×1, ×2, ×5, and ×10.
Still, mastering 1 through 12 is a real achievement, and it takes structured practice.
The Right Order to Teach
Don't start at ×1 and march through to ×12. That's the most common approach, and it's also the most likely to fail. Kids burn out around ×6 or ×7 and never really master the hard ones.
Instead, teach tables in this order of difficulty:
- ×1 and ×0 — identity and zero properties, essentially free
- ×2 — just doubles
- ×10 — add a zero
- ×5 — skip counting ends in 0 or 5
- ×3 — doubles plus one group
- ×4 — double-double (4 × 7 = double 14 = 28)
- ×6, ×7, ×8, ×9 — the hard set
- ×11 and ×12 — patterns help (×11 repeats, ×12 is ×10 plus ×2)
This gives kids early wins, which keeps them motivated when they reach the harder tables.
How to Use Worksheets

Use worksheets this way:
- Pick one table your child is currently working on
- Have them do a full page (usually 20-30 problems) timed at first, then untimed to build accuracy
- Review mistakes together — look for patterns in what's missed
- Repeat daily for a week, then move on
The "Hard Six"
Every kid I've taught has struggled with the same six facts:
- 6 × 7 = 42
- 6 × 8 = 48
- 7 × 8 = 56
- 6 × 9 = 54
- 7 × 9 = 63
- 8 × 9 = 72
If your child knows everything else but these, don't worry — that's normal. Spend a dedicated week on just this set. Write each fact on an index card, drill them ten times a day, and they'll move into long-term memory.
Mnemonics That Help
Some kids benefit from silly sayings:
- 6 × 7 = 42: "six times seven, give me forty-two"
- 7 × 8 = 56: "five, six, seven, eight — 56 = 7 × 8"
- 8 × 8 = 64: "I ate and ate and got sick on the floor, eight times eight is 64"
These aren't required — but they can break a stuck kid unstuck.
Mix It Up
Once your child has worked through each table individually, switch to mixed practice. A worksheet with random facts from every table forces them to recall each fact cold, not in sequence. This is where real fluency is built.
Most kids need 2-3 weeks of daily mixed practice before facts become truly automatic.
What Mastery Looks Like
Your child has mastered multiplication facts when they can:
- Answer any fact from 0 × 0 to 12 × 12 in 3 seconds or less
- Answer facts in random order, not just sequence
- Do so without counting on fingers or restarting from ×1
That's the target. Once they're there, multi-digit multiplication, long division, and fractions all get dramatically easier.
